Blythe Intaglios

These rare geoglyphs were carved into the desert pavement near the Colorado River, a short drive from what is now the city of Blythe, California.  They’re estimated to be at least several hundred years old, and are still visible, although nearly all of them have been damaged by off-road vehicles, vandals, and even folks trying to “restore” them.

They’re not really meteorite related – I just thought they were interesting and might be worth sharing here.  I grew up in Southern California and hadn’t heard about them until I stumbled across them in Google Earth one day.  I knew about the Nazca Lines in Peru, but didn’t know we had anything like this in the US.

Please stop and think before you drive across the open desert, or disturb centuries-old pavement.  Those tracks you leave could last much longer than you do.
