[California], mesosiderite

This stone was found by Roger Plata in 2005, while he was metal detecting in the Mojave Desert.  Roger suspected that his find might be a pallasite and held onto it – he eventually brought it to James Greenler for identification in early 2023.  James  runs ‘The Rock Pile,’ a rock shop in Quartzsite, Arizona, and is a longtime metal detectorist and meteorite hunter.  James reached out to Jason, and, while the stone hasn’t been cut yet, it’s a mesosiderite.

These are the photos James shared in early 2023 –

Can’t fault Roger and James for thinking it might have been a pallasite, with big green crystals like that..

And here is Roger with his find –

Roger asked us to keep the find location confidential for the time being, so it might be a little while until this stone is published.  For the time being, I will simply say that the spot is known, and it is in San Bernardino County.
