NWA 6494, H/L3
This cute stone came from Rob Elliott some years ago. From his photos, it was easy to tell that the stone was an unequilibrated chondrite, but it wasn’t until after it was analyzed that we discovered it might be more interesting. After Dr. Alan Rubin completed his work on the stone, it was submitted it as an L3. The folks at the Meteoritical Bulletin came back saying that the data suggested it was an H3, and that they wanted to approve it as such. The Fa values did support their conclusion, but all other data supported a classification of ‘L.’ I opted to hold off on getting it approved as an ‘H’ until further work was done. We’re looking at the Co content of its kamacite to determine its type, and it should be approved soon, one way or the other.
