Patrimonio, L6
Patrimonio fell on August 6, 1950, in Brazil. Per Grady’s Catalogue of Meteorites, approximately 20 stones were recovered, the largest of which weighed 1,800 grams. The total known weight of the fall is listed as 2.2 kilograms
On September 2nd, 2018, the Museu Nacional in Rio de Janeiro tragically burned to the ground. Early estimates suggest that the number of samples lost or destroyed may have been twice the total number currently housed in the British Museum. Fortunately, meteorites are fairly resilient; the main mass of Patrimonio was recovered, along with some other specimens that had been on display. It can be seen in this Global News video at the 12-second mark and onwards:
The main mass of Patrimonio can be seen just below the center of this image.
The main mass and one larger individual have been cut; this 490 gram stone is likely the largest complete stone left, and may be the largest specimen in private hands. It came from the collection of Lorenzo Giacomelli.
