São Julião de Moreira, IIAB
This rare Portuguese iron was discovered in 1883, and was thoroughly distributed, with much of the material being lost. In the Handbook of Iron Meteorites, Buchwald notes that specimens preserving the original exterior of the iron are rare. This is one such piece; the rear of the end cut exhibits shallow regmaglypts.
For those of you interested in owning a copy of Buchwald’s seminal treatise on iron meteorites, obtaining a copy is now easier (and ~$2,000 cheaper) than ever! Just click here to download it!
This 44-gram end cut with schreibersite and troilite inclusions came from the collection of Dr. Wilhelm Salomon-Calvi, a prominent German geologist in the first half of the 20th century.
