This meteorite has a wonderful history. A bright fireball was observed on the morning of March 25, 1865. The fall was witnessed by local residents, and two stones (700 & 800 grams) were recovered five days after the fall. However, the event was not reported to scientists until some years after the fall, by which time the larger of the two recovered stones had been misplaced. The account from John L. Smith and Joseph B. Marvin (1876), from the American Journal of Science is below:
The Catalogue of Meteorites lists ~330 grams of this meteorite as accounted-for; this would be one of the larger specimens. This slice comes from the personal collection of Dr. Lincoln La Paz, and was passed on to us by his son-in-law.
11.325 gram slice, British Museum label.
